ABOUT ME
Marta Sarmiento
Information Design & Visual Communication
I’m a senior designer with over 20 years of experience across visual communication, information design, editorial design, branding, digital design and data storytelling.
I look for the visual idea that gives a message its potential. With data and complex information, that starts with analysing, organising and simplifying: finding a clear structure before translating it into engaging visual communication. I’m curious about different approaches and rarely settle automatically for the first solution.
My background began in graphic and editorial design before moving into web and digital design for many years. Grids, layout, balance and hierarchy remained central, while changing technologies required continuous learning and adaptation. Branding has also remained part of my practice.
I’ve worked across the private and public sectors in Spain and Belgium, with extensive remote and international collaboration. In previous companies I coordinated small design teams and contributed to design decisions. On selected independent projects, including Manual of Fibromyalgia, I managed the client and project directly.
Since 2019, I’ve worked as an external design consultant for the European Commission, primarily with its Directorate-General for Communication, turning complex information, data and policy messages into clear, engaging and creative visual communication. On EUDataCrunch, I took broad project responsibility, coordinating with other DGs and following the work closely with other designers.
Competitions and independent creative challenges have kept me exploring beyond everyday briefs. I’m comfortable taking work from initial concept through final production, working independently when needed and valuing the specialist skills and different perspectives of collaborators.
